Decarbonising logistics: The Danish Green Freight Network
Published: 27th September, 2024

Driving meaningful change

The logistics sector is in the midst of a transformative shift towards sustainability, with decarbonisation at the forefront. The logistics sector accounts for approximately 5-7% of scope 3 emissions for VELUX, so investing time and resources in making meaningful changes can accelerate our collective move towards a greener future.

Enter the Danish Green Freight Network, an exciting new initiative founded by VELUX, The LEGO Group, and Danfoss. This network is dedicated to making a significant impact on decarbonising transportation for the nation's larger companies.

What are scope 3 emissions?
Scope 3 emissions are the indirect greenhouse gas emissions that occur in a company’s value chain, both upstream and downstream. These emissions often constitute the majority of a company’s total emissions, making them crucial for carbon footprint reduction efforts. For the logistics function at VELUX, this includes emissions from such activities as the shipping of raw materials to manufacturing sites, transport of finished products to distribution centres, and transport of our products to customers.

Harnessing the expertise, experience, and innovative capabilities of logistics professionals at member companies, the network is uniquely positioned to drive the decarbonisation agenda for logistics. Together, we aim to accelerate decarbonisation, tackle scope 3 emissions, and help get our planet back on track.

Senior Program Manager, Nadia Møllebjerg, VELUX’s representative in Danish Green Freight Network, couldn't be more excited about the initiative. "Gathering so many of Denmark’s large companies in the network ensures that we can make substantial strides in reducing emissions," said Nadia. "By inspiring each other and leading the way, we can hopefully create a ripple effect, encouraging other companies to adopt similar best practices, amplifying the overall impact on decarbonisation."

Freight Project Manager & ESG Lead at Danfoss, Kasper Noes, represents Danfoss in the Danish Green Freight Network. He comments: “The remarkable aspect of this network is that it is member-driven, providing us with a platform to collaborate with colleagues in the same field across different companies. We are confident that this network will bring valuable insights on how we can reduce our emissions.”

The first official meeting of the network was held at the end of September 2024.

DECARBONISATION
Decarbonising our value chain
In the VELUX Group, 98% of our carbon footprint relates to scope 3 emissions and comes from outside our own operations, the majority from the materials used in our products. To reach our targets of reducing CO2e from our value chain, we have identified and are working with several decarbonisation strategies.
WASTE MANAGEMENT
Greenwood waste reduction
Over the past few years, the VELUX Greenwood site in South Carolina has focused on reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills. In 2023 this has resulted in an impressive reduction in landfilled waste of over 40% since 2022.

RENEWABLE ENERGY
BayWa 2024 Update
A large solar park developed for the VELUX Group to meet its renewable power needs in Europe is now fully operational and connected to the local electricity grid in Spain.
CIRCULARITY
Low-carbon blinds
In 2023, VELUX launched a new range of low-carbon blinds. This new product range is helping us learn about how we can reduce carbon emissions and increase circularity in product development.

REDUCING EMISSIONS
Investing in renewables
As part of the VELUX Group’s ongoing efforts to reduce emissions from our own operations and ultimately to deliver on our target of 100% reduction in our operational emissions, we are continuously improving the energy efficiency of our production process.
WWF FOREST PROJECT
New livelihoods for local communities
In the Albertine Rift in Uganda, where we have financed the first forest project developed and delivered by WWF, local communities are an important part of the regeneration of the forest. Their involvement is vital for reversing forest and biodiversity loss and addressing climate issues.
WWF FOREST PROJECT
Protecting and restoring the world’s forests
The VELUX Group has financed two new forest conservation and restoration projects in Viet Nam and Madagascar. Like the first forest project in Uganda launched in 2021, these projects are being developed and delivered by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
